The Golden Rules of Digital LED Signage

Digital signage is an emerging technology. Today, it can be used in every industry and organization to support their brand, services and operational business strategies. It brings a competitive advantage, increases conversions and improves business performance when used effectively.

Digital signage has the potential to give your business or organization a more rewarding environment. However, it is important to remember that in electronic message centers, LED Displays, or outdoor electronic signs, etiquette still matters. Being a good neighbor is essential in making a make a positive impact on the community.

Here are the 3 golden rules to keep in mind.

  1. Brightness level

The brightness level should be visible, readable and conspicuous enough to be effective. A digital LED sign should be easily viewable even when exposed to direct sunlight. Poor anti-reflective treatment and inadequate brightness will put an outdoor digital display solution to waste. On the other hand, having a screen that is too bright will be difficult for viewers, especially motorists, to see.

The brightness level of a digital sign at night is an issue that the sign industry and community deal with. It can be distracting, unreadable and ineffective when programmed to be too bright at night.

Using a signage software control system that allows a scheduling of brightness levels is key. Most LED signs are already using technology to ensure an appropriate brightness level. They are designed to produce sufficient brightness to ensure clear legibility during daytime and change its brightness settings during night time hours. You can use the program to set the time the sign brightens as well as the time that it should dim.

Other advantages of appropriate brightness levels include:

It is important to use your digital signage to its full potential. Remember that your goal is to attract attention and deliver useful information. Your message can get lost in too much clutter on the display. It will create confusion and viewers may have a hard time understanding your message or just ignore it completely. Don't risk your signage sabotaging your marketing efforts.

What to avoid:

  • Too much text
  • Too much color, images and motion
  • Complex messages
  • No content hierarchy

Keep your content simple and appropriate. Be subtle with content and colors. Also take note of your slide timing. The recommended time is from six to 10 seconds per slide.

Limit your display content to one idea. For instance, instead of paragraph-length safety tips, show it in a brief sentence: "Caution! Construction in Progress"

Make your viewers focus on one idea or call-to-action. It is easier to digest a simple message than cramming multiple events in one slide. 

  1. Power On and Off

Digital LED signs that are used for traffic control, transportation information, emergency messaging or government use are required to run 24 hours a day. Business and commercial signage can operate on their own hours.

Businesses that are just in operation for certain hours don't need to have their signs on at all times. In some instances, it is advisable to leave the screen of an indoor signage in operation if it's visible through the windows. 

All digital displays have a limited lifespan. One of the best ways to extend this investment is to limit the hours of operation. Not only does it decrease maintenance costs, but also gives you major power savings.

How to do it:

  • Just like with the brightness level, you can use software controls. Set your displays to turn off and on each day to preserve its lifespan. The more up-to-date digital displays can be scheduled to turn themselves on and off automatically.

Hint: 

During the colder seasons, LED signs take more time than normal to boot up, so schedule the power on a little bit earlier. 

  • Dim the screen to zero nit intensity. This method keeps the LED sign and the computer on-line and powered-up. This does not require a full start re-boot.
