Boeing uses real-time LED production display to meet lean manufacturing goals.

Adaptive’s AlphaVision PC Series cost-effectively provides real-time data to the plant floor, while offering flexibility for the future.

Milwaukee, WI, January 27, 2005 . . . Adaptive Micro Systems LLC today discloses details of a leading-edge LED production display implementation at The Boeing Company. The AlphaVision PC series was selected for use at Boeing’s 777 production facility for its ability to meet current real-time information-sharing needs and provide the flexibility necessary to readily adapt to the changing demands of Boeing’s lean manufacturing program.

“With the introduction of the AlphaVision PC, we moved from an internal backlit incandescent system to a state-of-the-art LED solution,” notes Brian Bellevue, Manager of 777 Moonshine Operations for Boeing. “Originally, we were working with an internally fabricated board for displaying “cause” codes associated with production delaying events. We needed to add more display boards to meet our plant floor requirements, but the internally fabricated solution was costly to produce and offered no flexibility. When we saw an Adaptive LED display in use at our F22 operation, it looked exactly like what we needed for our 777 line.”

Excellent viewability

Bellevue specified a 91/2’ x 31/2’ doubled-sided AlphaVision PC for the 777 line. “The quality and visibility of Adaptive’s LED display enabled us to replace the old 16’ x 8’ board with a more compact solution… without sacrificing viewability,” says Bellevue. “As a result, we were able to realize a significant cost savings while still displaying all the necessary data effectively.” Today, Boeing uses the AlphaVision PC to display seven categories of data, ranging from cause codes for engineering, to parts, tooling and non-conformance.

Flexibility for the future

System flexibility was key to Boeing’s decision to implement the AlphaVision PC. Convenient PC connectivity enables the AlphaVision PC to display data from laptops or PCs, including graphs, tables and charts from such familiar programs as Excel. This capability opens up greater possibilities for real-time distribution of more data and more advanced data on the plant floor. “With processes involving 30,000 man-hours per plane and continuously moving lines, new capabilities are vital to getting improved production systems operational,” adds Bellevue.

Ease of implementation

“In addition, Adaptive made the implementation process very easy,” concludes Bellevue. “The display was delivered as promised and offered plug-and-go convenience. When you
consider that we are implementing four displays in all, serving 250 people over three shifts, the ease of implementation and the reliability of the system are critical.”
